The Devil, the Witch, and Almighty God

Solo exhibition at the Cistern of the Faculty of Fine Arts (Lisbon) - August 7 to 28, 2025

The exhibition "The Devil, the Witch, and Almighty God" offered an immersion into the history of witchcraft in Portugal through the narratives of women accused of sorcery. The project recovers names, images, and symbols associated with these processes of persecution, bringing to the surface stories marked by institutional violence, erasure, and the construction of the feminine as a threat. By evoking these figures, the exhibition pays homage to the women silenced by the Inquisition and invites visitors to an encounter with a historical memory that is still not collectively processed.

Through an installation and multimedia approach, the exhibition featured three installation works that occupied the center of the FBAUL Cistern, namely Perpetual Penitential Habit, Spells , and The Holy Office. Ten tiles in a series entitled Witch's Hammer were installed on the walls, and a set of embroidered works was presented in a straw basket so that visitors could handle them. Finally, the animation Flamma , conceived for the exhibition, was projected under the stairs leading to the cistern space.
