Thaumatropes

Thaumatropes are victorian toys, originally created with paper disks that had an image on each side. The disk was to be attached to two opposing threads, that when twisted caused the disk to spin. The images on each side, when rotated like this, created the illusion of one image, that was the sum of both parts.

Here, instead of a paper disk, wooden spoons painted on both sides can be rolled with the palm of the hands, and create the same effect.

The spoon, linked to the traditional feminine roles of cooking, becomes a medium to reflect on the duality of the feminine, with its bright and dark sides.
